The United States dropped the military’s largest non-nuclear bomb in Afghanistan on Thursday after a Green Beret was killed in a clash with ISIS fighters in the region, reports Fox News.
The GBU-43B, a conventional bomb weighing over 21,000 lbs, was dropped on an underground ISIS complex in Nangarhar Province. The cave system was being used by Islamic State fighters to smuggle weapons and people in to Afghanistan.
The Massive Ordinance Air Blast (MOAB) has been described by military officials as the ‘Mother of all bombs’. Until Thursday, it has never been used in combat.
The military is currently assessing the damage caused by the bomb.
The GBU-43B was dropped by a MC-130 aircraft, but was so large it had to be released from the plane’s back door.
