Jamey Johnson is one of the most highly-respected singers and songwriters in country music right now. In addition to his own hit songs, he's penned major hits for artists such as George Strait, Trace Adkins, and Merle Haggard.
Johnson's work has been heavily praised by fans and professionals alike. In 2007, he took home the award for "Song of the Year" at both the ACM and CMA Awards for Strait's "Give it Away." He repeated the feat in 2009 with his own song, "In Color." In addition to those honors, he's been nominated for an impressive total of nine Grammy Awards.
With the exception of his 2014 Christmas EP, the last album Johnson released was 2012's Grammy-nominated Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran. But after announcing a major career change on Tuesday (February 28), it seems that Johnson is gearing up to make some more music.
All Access Music group confirmed that Johnson has officially signed with SESAC as his new representation. Country Music Tattle Tale states that Johnson made the decision to sign with SESAC after developing a strong relationship with several of its staff members. Johnson shares a particuarly close relationship with staff member Sahnnan Hatch.
"Shannan is like family to me, which is another reason it makes perfect sense," he said.
Johnson continued to explain his motivation for signing with the organization:
"I need to be surrounded by people who are motivating me to write. One of those motivators is knowing that I have someone looking after the money generated from my writing, and that I am actually going to get the royalties that I feel like I have earned."
SESAC also feels that Johnson will fit in well with them. The organization's Chairman and CEO John Josephson spoke about how he's looking forward to working with Johnson down the road:
"Jamey is a storyteller, crafting lyrics and music that transport listeners to another time and place, whether that place is a war zone or a night out with friends SESAC is proud to welcome him to our affiliate family."
Sounds like Johnson has made a great step toward furthering his career. We can't wait to see what he's able to accomplish now!
