Mister Rogers was right!

Mister Rogers dropping some knowledge.

Many of us grew up watching “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” on TV and Fred Rogers’ influence still affects kids today. That man connected with kids like no one else, so he could entertain and educate them in a unique way. Here are some of the best lessons he taught that are still relevant today.

How to console children during times of tragedy - Mr. Rogers wanted parents to be honest with kids about tragic events, and one of his most famous quotes reflects that. “My mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping',” he explains. “To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world."

Accept your kids for who they are - When Mr. Rogers sang, “It’s you I like, It’s not the things you wear. It’s not the way you do your hair. But it’s you I like, the way you are right now, the way deep down inside you. Not the things that hide you. It’s you I like,” it doesn’t get more unconditional that than.

Be compassionate to your children - He valued being nice over being right or strict. “There are three ways to ultimate success,” Mr. Rogers said. “The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind."

How to deal with milestones and endings - Milestones can be bittersweet and filled with mixed emotions and Mr. Rogers understood that and offered comfort with these words: “Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else."

Teach your kids to be learners - Mr. Rogers knew how important it is to teach kids how to love learning and he supported letting them learn freely so little minds can discover lessons in their adventures. “The more you learn,” he said, “the better feeling you have about yourself and the world we live in.”
