Should you take off work after a break-up? (REALLY??)

What is it about having a broken heart that makes us feel like we can’t treat it like any other mental health breakdown? You’re at your most vulnerable when the person you love is suddenly not in your life anymore, and because of it, you may be inclined to take off some work. Is that okay?

The answer is yes, but it’s not a free card for a week of ‘funemployment.’ Here are the things you should consider if you’re about to take a day for yourself when your heart is broken:

  • Consider your coworkers– If you’re in the middle of some huge project, and you really can’t let your work homies hangin’, you should consider at least postponing your mental health day if you can.
  • Do what feels right– If it’s one of those breakups that’s left you in bed until noon and unable to eat a full meal, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to lick your wounds for a second.
  • Be honest about it– Even if it’s just letting one trusted coworker know, you should be honest about why you’re taking off. Don’t fake a family death or something.
  • Talk it out first– Do whatever you can post-breakup with a goal of going to work as usual. It should only be a last resort to take the day for yourself.

As with all breakups, no one truly understands what’s going down but the people involved. If it’s a breakup that leaves a scar but won’t hinder your day-to-day, force yourself to get out of bed each morning and go about business as usual. The distraction of work could actually help you out. But if it’s a deep cut, and you need to seek extra help, taking a sick day shouldn’t ruin your life.
