Halloween for the entire family!

Some moms manage to get their entire family to coordinate semi-elaborate group Halloween costumes that leave the rest of us wishing we could do it too. So if you’re not one of “those moms,” but want to pull off a group costume for your family, this is what you need to know, according to a mom who makes it happen every year with her little kids, husband, and dog.

  • It’s okay to do it for the ‘Gram- It’s tough to finish a workday then rush home to do hair, makeup and costumes for the entire family to head out the door to go trick-or-treating, so if you want to go all out on your elaborate family costumes just for a photo you’ll post on social media, go for it. That way you’re not scrambling to get it all done on Halloween night and can focus on the kids.
  • Incorporate pets and pregnancies- When you’re coming up with group costume ideas, start with the trickiest family members - like dogs or baby bellies - first and work from there.
  • Let older kids be part of the process- Babies and really young kids don’t have opinions about the costumes, but when they’re preschool age, they’ll have ideas about what everyone should be and the whole thing will go more smoothly if they feel involved.
  • Get your dream costumes in early- Once kids have opinions about costumes, they might refuse to go with your “Beetlejuice” or “Game of Thrones” idea, so while your kids are young and you still get to pick, do the more PG-13 ones while you can.
  • Be prepared to spend time and money- You may be able to find everything you need for all the costumes on Amazon Prime, but it’s expensive when you’re dressing up three, five, or more people. But if you DIY, you’ll spend hours on prep, so either way it’s going to cost you.
  • Remember who you’re dealing with- A wig may be part of your vision for your toddler’s costume, but if they refuse to wear it without crying, you’re probably better off finding another option and having a happier Halloween.
  • Don’t let the costumes ruin the fun- Who cares if you nail the perfect family Halloween costume if no one’s having a good time? Keep it all in perspective and remember having fun is what matters.
