Email rules for 2020 to use in and around the office!

It’s a new decade and email isn’t going away. So if you’ve already got an inbox filling up in 2020, here’s some tips to be the best electronic mailer your contacts has ever seen.

  • Shorten any email over three sentences long.Take out any self-references, second-guessing, and any redundancy. Here’s a basic editing hack. Delete your first paragraph that you probably used to warm up, and delete your last paragraph which is likely just repetitive.Save your friends and co-workers the time, and maybe they’ll do the same for you.
  • The “Three-Minute Rule.”The trick to writing a concise email is a stop watch according to Nick Douglas.Sit down at your keyboard and set a timer for three minutes. Now write that whole email before the time runs out. If you need more time than that, it’s time to switch to an actual, good old fashioned IRL conversation.
  • Cut the crap.Check for overuse of exclamation points, emojis, and qualifiers like “just” and “possibly.” You don’t need to go overboard on sounding friendly via email. Cut out the passive language and start emailing like a boss.
