The fear of the flu is real among Americans!

We are currently in the height of flu season, and whether they got a flu shot or not, it seems most folks are worried coming down with it.

A new survey finds:

  • 60% of Americans are either extremely or quite concerned about caching the flu.
  • That’s up from just 32% our years ago.
  • Due to this concern, 80% of people say they’re washing their hands more frequently, thoroughly and longer after using a public restroom.
  • Also in public restrooms, 93% of people use evasive measures to keep away from germs. They include
    • Using a paper towel when touching door handles, faucets and toilet flushers (65%)
    • Flushing the toilet with their foot (44%)

And people aren’t just worried about germs in public spaces.

  • 65% of Americans wipe down surfaces in their bathroom and kitchen when someone has a cold or flu, while 47% wipe down doorknobs and handles.
  • Folks are also worried about getting other people sick, so they change the way they greet each other.
    • 54% wave hello
    • 48% avoid shaking hands
    • 18% use fist or elbow bumps
  • ONE MORE THING!While we all know it’s important to wash our hands after using the toilet, even when it’s not flu season, it doesn’t always happen. In fact, those surveyed say they wash their hands 86% of the time after using a public restroom. What’s more, 67% admit they’ve skipped the soap and just rinsed.
