These days it isn’t uncommon to see young kids on smartphones and tablets, which can leave them vulnerable to the dangers lurking on the web. And sadly, it seems many parents are a bit clueless when it comes to protecting them.
A new survey of 1,000 parents with kids between the ages of five and 16 finds:
- 98% of parents are concerned about their children’s privacy online.
- While parents feel it is their responsibility to protect their kids online, 68% admit either not feeling able, or only sometimes feeling able, to control their children's privacy.
- The poll also finds 61% of parents teach their children about online safety, but it seems they may be unaware of the dangers lurking online.
- While most parents are concerned about people who lurk on the web, and possibly look to contact kids, there are other dangers they know nothing about. For example:
- 36% were clueless that companies could exploit their children's data for commercial gain.
- 33% were unaware companies could use their children's digital footprint to target inappropriate ads at them.
- 39% said they didn't know cybercriminals could be selling their children's information on the dark web.
So what are parents doing to try and protect their children?
- 58% say they restrict their children’s use of laptops, tablets and smartphones.
- 69% update safeguards and filters for language, nudity and violence.
- Only 47% say they’d install a private search engine to decrease their kid’s digital footprint.
