Make the best of your video call!

Not long ago, most of us did our work in an office or some work space that wasn’t our bed or sofa. But now that so many people are working from home, we have to learn to navigate the do’s and don’ts of it all, including virtual meetings. There is still professional etiquette to follow at the home office and these tips can help keep your video calls profesh.

  • Optimize your space and webcam image- Before the call, test to make sure your webcam and microphone are connected and running properly. Check your Internet speed onspeedtest.netto make sure it’s running at least 20 megabits per second. And get rid of anything embarrassing in the background.
  • Please mute- When you’re not talking in a meeting, please mute yourself. And if you’re hosting a Zoom meeting, you may want to mute other people on the call since they’ll probably forget to do it themselves.
  • Keep calls focused and efficient- Make an agenda beforehand and share it with your team. Then try to keep it short and simple, since it’s easier to drift off during a virtual meeting.
  • Close the door if you can- If you’re able to do your call in a room where you can close the door, that’s better because it helps minimize distracting noises. If not, let everyone in your living space know you’re on a call so they can give you space and be quiet -not that your kids will care.
  • It doesn’t have to be video- Not every meeting needs to be video, so go audio-only when you can or even go old school and do it on a phone call.
