To dine out, or not to dine out, that is the question!

It’s been a long time since a lot of us dined out at a restaurant, and while restaurants in some parts of the country have already started reopening, it pretty apparent having a meal out will be very different once we all start doing it again.

A new Zagat survey of more than 7,000 diners finds:

  • Two out of three respondents say they’ll wait more than a week after re-opening to dine out again.
  • 93% plan to wait more than three weeks.
  • 75% of Americans say health and safety concerns are the biggest reason they won’t rush to dine out again.
  • Only 32% of people say they feel very or somewhat comfortable dining out.
  • 47% feel somewhat or very uncomfortable about dining out again.
  • 83% of those hesitant to return do say they’ll be more comfortable with social distancing measures in place, and masks worn by staff.
  • 77% say the option for outdoor dining will increase their likelihood of eating out.

But folks really would love things to go back to normal, because many do miss dining out. According to the survey:

  • 57% of diners say the type of dining spot they miss the most is their favorite neighborhood spot.
  • 33% miss their favorite fine dining restaurant.
  • 8% miss the cocktail bar that mixes their favorite drinks.
  • The survey also finds that one of the big things folks are missing is socializing at restaurants with friends.
