Relationship "types" that the lockdown created!

And here you thought the only glaciers you had to worry about were the ones melting up north? Little did you know there were figurative ones forming between you and your partner...thanks to quarantining.

  • You may have heard about the ‘turbo relationships’ formed during the lockdown. These are the folks that matched, fell in love, and moved in together within a month so they didn’t have to go through this crisis alone.
  • On the flip side of that is‘glacial relationships.’These are couples who were hitting it off until COVID hit and now the spark between them has shut down faster than a concert venue.

According to psychologist Dr. Kathy Nickerson, couples have the distance to blame. Being forced to shelter apart can throw a wrench into anyone’s momentum. Going from hanging out every night to talking on the phone every once in a while isn’t exactly the type of romance they make movies about. Dr. Nickerson also says quarantine-related stress has also had a hand in slowing down relationships. “When we don't feel good, we tend to shut down, retreat, and hideaway,” she explains. So even the sexiest Zoom date gets turned down because we literally “can’t even.”

But it’s not 100% terrible. Psychologist Dr. Margarida Rafael says if your relationship has been slowed to a ‘glacial’ pace, it’s a great opportunity to talk and get to know each other. When things open back up, and more restrictions get lifted, you’ll be able to melt that ice off your connection and get right back falling in love like it’s 2019.
