How to make the most out of the virtual class!

If you told someone in the 90s that college would be going digital in 2020, they’d probably think,‘oh cool, virtual reality!’Unfortunately, it’s not exactly “Tron.” It’s more like the world’s most expensive Zoom call. But here’s how to make the most of the new normal everyone keeps mentioning.

  • Attend office hours. You know that section on the front of your class syllabus that says “office hours?” A lot of professors are keeping those hours available for calls or digital meetings. Take advantage of the chance to get one-on-one with your professor and clear up anything that your wifi signal or attention span may have distorted.
  • Be familiar with the learning platform’s features. If you’re new to your school's learning platform, spend some time clicking around in it, and learning its quirks. For example, if it has a messaging function, make sure you know how to message individuals instead of the whole class. And make sure your browser can handle it so you’re not finding out midway through a test that it can’t.
  • Check your email. In a virtual semester, you should be logging into your student email just about as much as you log into Twitter. That’s where you’re going to stay connected with campus news, events, and safety protocols. It’s also where the cutie in the bottom left box of the virtual classroom is going to message you to join their study group. Don’t miss it!
