Job hunting tips while in lockdown!

It’s no secret that a lot of people lost their jobs due to the coronavirus. But while it may seem hopeless finding a job in this day and age, there are folks hiring. But with so many others on the hunt for a new gig, standing out from the herd won’t be easy, but it isn’t impossible.

The “Wall Street Journal” has come out with some tips on how to get hired during the current climate, seeking advice from executives, career coaches and the newly re-employed. Among their tips:

  • Anyone can network (and everyone needs to)– Networking is still the biggest tool in helping folks find a job. Now’s a good time to catch up with former colleagues who may be able to put you in touch with folks hiring. Virtual events can also be helpful. In this day and age, who you know is important to landing a job.
  • Consider your goals – be specific– While you may think your only goal is getting a paycheck, not having a clear goal as to what you’re looking for could slow down your job hunt. Knowing what you’re looking for will make it easier to articulate it to recruiters and those in your network.
  • Be flexible – and realistic – about location– While a lot of employees are working from home these days, job seekers need to be upfront about how they feel about relocation. If you don’t live anywhere near the employer, make sure it’s clear that a job is completely remote and that you won’t at some point be asked to return to the office.
  • Be prepared for a 100% virtual interview process– These days it’s normal for folks to be hired and brought into a company without ever meeting their colleagues in person. Folks need to do whatever they can to stand out in a virtual world. One expert recommends performing a test video call to make sure your tech is working properly so there are no glitches during the interview.
