No one would fault you if your morale isn’t exactly stellar right now but the longer it’s low, the worse your work is going to be. Positive morale tends to mean an increase in productivity and satisfaction while negative morale does the opposite. Here are a few strategies if you need a boost:
- Emphasize Learning Over Winning. Set your bar lower and celebrate progress instead of huge accomplishments. Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson says that positivity builds, which makes us more open to learning and bigger challenges. On the flip side, sports psychologist Charlie Maher states negativity hinders performance and can be distracting.
- Choose To Be A “Tank Filler.” If you’re feeling low, there’s a good chance your coworkers and friends are too, so work on helping one another. Fill up their “morale tank” and they might do the same for you. Make a point to offer praise, appreciation, and recognition whenever you can. Even something as simple as smiling and actively listening during a Zoom meeting could be enough to boost them up.
- Celebrate Little Victories. Take the time to celebrate small achievements. You’d be surprised just how quickly those little “participation trophies” you give yourself throughout the day can boost your emotions and increase your motivation. So give yourself more pats on the back and then celebrate that your flexible enough to do that.
