A good family exercise: Create a "Thankful Pumpkin"!

With everything we’ve been through in 2020 it’s easy to see the negative. But if you’re looking for a way to shift your family’s perspective to all there is to be grateful for? Try a “Thankful Pumpkin.” Author Amy Latta came up with the idea nearly a decade ago as a way to celebrate all her family was grateful for and since then it’s become a popular trend with other families who want to bring the focus of the holidays back to what they’re appreciative for in their everyday lives.

Latta got her inspiration for the pumpkins after playing the “thankful game” at meals, with relatives taking turns going around the table saying things they’re grateful for. She grabbed a pumpkin and started writing them down “to physically see just how many blessings” they had. “It was a great visual reminder of how blessed we are and my son loved watching the pumpkin fill up as we added to it every day,” she explains.

Ready to DIY a thankful pumpkin? It couldn’t be any simpler. Just grab a pumpkin and a permanent marker and get your family members to list things they’re thankful for this year. You can add to it every day and leave it out as a centerpiece and by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, you’ll have a festive decoration of all the things that make life so sweet.
