If just thinking about heading home for the holidays has you anxious and tense, you’re not alone. Not everyone has a picture perfect, supportive, and loving family to enjoy Thanksgiving with, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still make the best of it. If you want to skip the family drama and all the stress that comes with it, try these tactics and remember what you’re actually thankful for.
- Remember that it’s not about you- If relatives make comments about your clothes, weight, friends, or love life, try to shake off their judgment because it’s not about you. All that really matters is that you’re living a life that’s right for you.
- Don’t take the bait- It’s hard not to snap back when someone says rude or mean things, but don’t take the “bicker bait.” It may feel good in the moment, but you may regret it in the long run.
- Try not to play the comparison game- No one’s perfect, so don’t worry about who has the cutest kids, best pie, best hair, and happiest life. Just be you and enjoy your holiday and loved ones.
- Leave your worries at home- Families can trigger all of our stuff, so try not to let them get into your head.
- Don’t get sucked into the drama- Some sort of family drama is bound to happen, but you can walk away and not get involved. You have a right to enjoy your holiday and be happy and if you don’t engage, others may even follow your lead.
