Should you get your boss a gift?

Since it’s now the season of giving, you may be wondering who exactly you need to be giving to. Especially in your office.

You and your coworker may have worked out a secret Santa, or a cookie exchange, but what about the person in charge of your holiday bonus?

According to a recent survey, 35% of employees say they’ve given a gift to their boss. If you’re in the other 65% that didn’t you may be thinking“I can’t believe they’d spend money on their boss”or “holy crap am I supposed to get something for my boss?”

Long answer short?Nope. “Gifts in a workplace should flow downward,” says Alison Green writer atAsk A Manager. “Not upward.” No manager should be financially benefiting from an employee other than through their work. “It strikes me as weird that the person one level below would have to expend money, which is scarcer for them, for someone who is making more,” says career coachCynthia Pong.Plus, she saysit’s going to look like a “low-key bribe” to your coworkers.

  • The best holiday gift for a boss is thoughtful feedback. If you really feel the need to give your boss something, Hogan suggest you write them a short, sweet and specific note or email describing how they helped you this year. “Who doesn’t love specific and actionable positive feedback?”
