Maybe we’ve been giving millennial men too much woke credit.Even though they’re into equality in the workplace, when it comes to home life, a new survey says men are still treating chores like their grandfathers did.
While women may be breaking through the glass ceiling more and more, they’re also the ones stuck cleaning up the pieces. The new poll reports that women are still more likely to do laundry, clean the house, do grocery shopping, prepare meals, wash dishes and make decisions about furniture and decorations.
Certainly, this doesn’t come to a shock to most straight women that their man is kind of a bum but here’s experts say it’s taking so long for guys to catch up to the times:
- Upbringing.University of Rochester professor of psychology Harry Reis says gender roles change “very, very” slowly and are something we carry on from our parents. “It’s more convenient and comfortable for people to follow the gender roles that they’ve grown up with.” And even though parents nowadays are trying to teach their children more gender-neutral roles, it’s still an ongoing struggle.
- Men aren’t fully committed to closing the gender gap. Christin Munsch, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut, says that most millennial men say they’re for gender equality but don’t practice what they preach.“They want to be these good feminist men that share housework,” says Munsch, but they aren’t doing it because men still refuse to do jobs that are considered “feminine.”Apparently, it’s de-masculating to clean a dish.
- Men lack motivation.A recent study showed women are judged more harshly for a messy home. Munsch says “women’s reputation takes a ding when things aren’t done but [Men] haven’t been doing it and no one is holding them accountable.”So how about this for motivation?According to Munsch, relationships with inequality in terms of housework and income are less stable. So start doing some laundry or you’ll have to crawl back to Tinder.
