A huge step to take after a break-up!

Social media is great for helping us stay in touch with loved ones. Sharing what’s going on in our lives is great, but when you’ve recently gone through a breakup,it can be the worst. Even if you’ve deleted them from all your accounts, sightings or mentions of your ex in a comment or a friend’s post, or worse – a cute photo of you two is bound to pop up in your ‘Memories’ from years’ past – and it’s the last thing you want to see. And these things aren’t just upsetting, anew studyfinds they’re actually making breakups harder than ever.

Researchers with the University of Colorado, Boulder, worked with participants who had gone through a breakup and then had an unsettling online encounter with their former S.O. afterwards. Even when they’d unfriended and deleted their exes, they kept showing up in news feeds, comments, likes, and that dreaded Memories feature. And even if you’ve done everything you can do get distance from this person, being constantly bombarded with reminders online can make it nearly impossible to move on.

So what are new singles supposed to do after a breakup to avoid their exes? Researchers say the best move is to unfriend, untag, block, or try Facebook’s Take A Break feature. And if that’s not enough? Try hopping off social media all together “for a while until you’re in a better place.”
