Social media is great when the memes are funny...and your thirst traps are making all the hotties…thirsty.But sometimes it goes from being a great distraction to being a major stressor.
If Facebook, Twitter, and the like are making you feel overwhelmed you may be suffering from “digital drain.” Here are some signs psychotherapist Emmy Brunner says to watch out for, and if you find yourself saying ‘oh lord, that’s me’ to a bunch of these, it may be time for a digital fast.
Signs you need a break from social media:
- You feel anxious every time you look at your phone
- You find yourself compulsively checking social media multiple times a day
- You’re avoiding work and neglecting self-care because of it
- You find yourself constantly comparing yourself to others
- You notice your mood dips during or after your time online
- You find yourself obsessing over likes and interactions
- You feel pressure to be perfect for social media
- You feel emotionally triggered by social media
If you’re feeling like social media is negatively affecting your life there are some steps you can take to turn things around. Brunner recommendations things like cutting out toxic people online, adding more groups that make you feel good, or refocusing on things offline.
