Lots of us are working from home right now because of coronavirus concerns and for some, that means staying connected with video conference calls. And while you may spend most of your work day in your jammies, you still want to appear professional in these virtual meetings. These pointers can help you look put together in front of the digital screen.
- Clothing- The idea is to dress in a way that’s consistent with what you wear to the office and make it look like you’re actually getting work done, not just napping and lounging around. The career experts say t-shirts, tank tops, and PJs are a definite no-no and advise women wear a sweater, blouse or cardigan, but say it’s okay to have a little fun with your bottoms since no one will see them.
- Hair & Makeup- Sure, you’re working at home, but your bosses will also be seeing you and the eyes are the first thing to look bad on camera. So put on some under-eye concealer to hide any dark circles, a little mascara, and some translucent powder to hide any glare on your face. As for your hair, TV hairstylists Crystal Foster says, “The keyword here is ‘polished,’” so go for sleek and flyaway free.
- Lighting- Nothing beats natural light according to celebrity makeup artist Nam Vo, who recommends facing a window as close as you can get.But if that’s not an option, she advises putting a light directly behind your computer because overhead lights create dark shadows and lighting from below can give you a double chin.
- Setup- To give the impression that you’re at work in an office, have the camera face a blank wall with a “few friendly props” like a plant or a piece of art so it’s not a totally empty space. Make sure there’s no clutter in view, try to get the camera at eye-level to be most-flattering and frame your head and shoulders in the shot.
