There’s no doubt we are currently in the midst of a national emergency, and it’s apparently proven how prepared, or not prepared, most Americans are to deal with such a thing.
A new report finds:
- While 80% of Americans followed guidelines to stockpile non-perishable food in case of an emergency, over 40% don’t have a three-day supply of water at their disposal.
- 61% of Americans would rely on electronic sources like TV and the Internet for information during an emergency.
- Only 16% of Americans have access to generators with backup power.
- Only 26% of people have picked a meet-up place in the event of an emergency, while only half have an emergency evacuation kit at the ready.
- Yet, 89% of Americans do have a plan regarding what to do with their pets in case they have to evacuate.
The report also reveals the metro areas with people who are most prepared for natural disasters, with Houston and Miami topping the list.
Top Ten Cities Most Prepared For Natural Disasters
- Houston, TX
- Miami, FL
- Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL
- Richmond, VA
- Oklahoma City, OK
- Atlanta, GA
- Detroit, MI
- Seattle, WA
- Baltimore, MD
- Riverside, CA
And the report found some very troubling facts about some of the biggest metro areas in the country. For example:
- 30% of New Yorkers don’t have access to a car, which means they’ll rely heavily on the transit system for transportation in the case of an emergency.
- Folks in Los Angeles are least likely to have evacuation funds of at least $2,000.
