Creating the perfect burger while at home!

A lot of restaurants claim they’ve got an award-winning burger. Some even go as far as to say they’ve got the world’s best burger. Bold, yes. True, who’s to say? But none of that matters now because you can’t really sit in their restaurant to taste them. If you want a delicious burg, you’re going to have to make it yourself. So here’s the step to the perfect burger.

  • The Bun. It’s the first thing that hits your tongue, and it’s basically the house of the burger. It’s an integral piece of the perfect burger thatLucky Chip’s burger maestro Ben Denner says “sometimes the bun is more important than the patty.” Unless you plan on baking your own, your local supermarket will have to do, so Denner recommends a “soft fluffy burger roll” vs a “cheap brioche” because they’re usually too dense.
  • The Meat.Honest Burger’sTom Bartonsays to never go lower than an 80-20 meat-to-fat ratio and to never add seasoning before cooking. Salt breaks down the structure of the meat so wait till the end instead, and then really have at it. According to Barton, the burger should end up tasting over seasoned because it will end up getting lost and tasting bland with the rest of the toppings.
  • Where to cook it.You can leave the cover on your grill and keep your George Foreman tucked away in your cabinet. The experts agree that the best way to cook the perfect burger is with a flat, non-stick pan, that’s as hot as possible, and has zero oil on it. Then it’s all about the crispy sear on the outside. Barton says to “focus on getting the exterior crust perfected, even if it means it’s more well-done.”
  • Toppings. You can’t go wrong with cheese. In fact, Barton says he’s “never tried a cheese that doesn’t taste good with a burger.” American, blue, cheddar, pepper jack… basically just close your eyes and reach into your dairy drawer and you won’t be disappointed. Then there are the other toppings. Here’s where you can freestyle. But if you’re aiming for burger perfection, Barton says you need to hit all the flavor notes: salt, sweet and sour. And the only way you can find the perfect combo is with trial and error. So it’s lucky you’ve got some free time on your hands to experiment.
