Want to boost your mood? Plan a trip!

Needing a little pick-me-up? You’re definitely not alone and it turns out, the fix could be as easy as planning a getaway. We get it, this is a tough time to plan a trip, but research shows people who schedule a vacation in advance feel better about their social situation, economic status, their health, and life in general.

So if you were thinking it’s too soon or things are too uncertain to plan your vacation this year, you may want to reconsider because doing it could give you a mental health boost. Astudyfrom Cornell University finds that spending money on experiences tends to make people happier than buying things and planning and anticipating the trip can be almost as much fun as going on the trip itself. This backs up previousresearchthat finds people are at their happiest when they have a vacation planned.

Researcher Matthew Killingsworth says we spend a lot of our “mental lives living in the future” and that trip-planning encourages an optimistic outlook. He explains, “Our future-mindedness can be a source of joy if we know good things are coming, and travel is an especially good thing to have to look forward to.”
