Steps to take now if you fear for your job.

How prepared for a layoff are you? This COVID situation has shown us that they can happen to basically anyone so you should really be getting yourself ready now if you’re still amongst the lucky that are still working. Here’s some things to consider and plan for, and also hope that you never have to follow through on.

  • Beware Of The IT Department. The people in charge of the servers at your office can monitor what you back up so make sure you’re not taking any information that’s proprietary with you. If you’re unsure what could get you in trouble, dust off that employee handbook you’ve got stuffed in your desk. That should tell you exactly what needs to stay in the office and what you can stick on a flash drive.
  • Clear out personal passwords and cached words. The associate vice president ofVantage Technology Consulting GroupJoanna Gramawould like to remind you that you “don’t accidentally want the IT team knowing the password or being able to get into any personal applications.” If you’re getting the feeling like you’re about to get the ax, make sure to retrace your digital steps around the office, delete any saved passwords, clear out your cache, and start getting into the habit of logging off.
  • Don’t erase work files.Don’t take this as your opportunity to exact some preemptive revenge on your company. Resist any urge to delete any work files. Alison Green fromAsk A Managersays “that can be considered a big deal and can affect your professional reputation if it looks like attempted sabotage.” Get even with the company that threw you to the curb by lapping them at your next job instead.
