When a news station talks to someone in the area who just turned 100, they always ask them: what’s the secret? Apparently, that’s the wrong question. A new study has found what they should be asking is:Where do you live?
Researchers from Washington State University studied a group of Centenarians and what they found is the neighborhood they live in seems to play a big role in them hitting the 100-year mark. According to the study, the perfect hood for getting old in is walkable and filled with folks of all ages. And being rich wouldn’t hurt. The researchers say people living in well-off urban and small-town areas enjoy better odds of living to 100.
Obviously, genetics is a huge factor for lifespan, but this study points to there being many other factors that go into living a long life. It also gives a blueprint for some important things communities should be adding for their older residents. Take the walkability stat for example. Better walking paths meant older adults had more access to exercise, medical care, and groceries. So you’ve got to ask yourself, are your sidewalks good enough to get you into your triple-digits?
