Get ready to go through your texts and emails and feel embarrassed because Insider has put together a list of the 5th-grade spelling lists, and you’re probably botching a bunch of them as an adult. Ready to play ‘are you smarter than a 10-year-old?’ Here’s some of the most common words you’re probably messing up.
Achieve and Receive. Do you know that “i before e” rule that was drilled into our head? It has some exceptions, but "achieve" isn’t one of them. On the other hand, when you "receive" a "c," you put "e" before "i."
Disappear. You probably don’t even notice it because spellcheck takes care of it for you but there’s only one ‘s’ in disappear. Just try to remember "Dis-" is a Latin prefix, and that “diss” is what your friends will do to you online if you misspell disappear one more time on Twitter.
Embarrass.Pop quiz, how many “r”s are in “embarrass?” If you said anything other than two, you should be embarrassed. Go ahead and thank the French for the second “r” because it comes from their word "embarrasser."
Caribbean.Shoutout to Disney for making sure we’d be messing up not only saying ‘Caribbean,’ but spelling it as well. Don’t be as foolish as a drunken pirate and double the "r" instead of the "b." The word comes from "Carib," the name of an indigenous people from Central America and northern South America.
