A lot of people dream of one day being their own boss, and a new survey finds that’s true for a lot of women, and sadly, for some, it’s because of how they’ve been treated in the workplace.
A new poll of 2,000 women across 15 countries finds:
- 73% of women aspire to open their own business, with 57% of Americans women wanting to.
- 62% of women across the globe say “becoming my own boss” is the main reason they want to start their own business.
- 80% want to be a role model for younger women.
- 62% want to start their own business because of the unfair treatment they received at previous jobs.
The survey also revealed the variety of unfair treatment women around the world have experienced in the office.
- 33% of women say they’ve had fewer opportunities for promotions.
- 31% noted a lack of equal pay compared to their male counterparts.
- 42% believe they were unfairly overlooked for a raise or promotion simply because of their gender, with the average respondent saying it happened three times.
- 25% of women faced pregnancy discrimination, with 43% of women saying they’ve delayed having a kid because of the negative effects it would have on their career.
- 72% of women believe they have had to work harder than men to get the same opportunities.
