LAYOFF: United Gives Notice to 36K
The coronavirus continues to take a heavy toll on the airline industry, with United sending notice today of a layoff of up to 36,000 employees.
United says it hopes to limit the number of layoffs by offering early retirement packages to some employees, and that the 36,000 number is a worst-case scenario. Agreements with various unions require the airline to give at least 60 days' notice, and some of those jobs could be saved.
The layoffs cannot start until October 1st -- a stipulation of the Payroll Support Program that gave United $5 billion this spring.
