As far as eerie feelings go, déjà vu is up there with the creepiest. And when you experience it more than once in a blue moon, it can start to feel like you’re losing it. But before you throw yourself in the looney bin, let’s calm those nerves by going through why experts say we experience déjà vu in the first place.
- Things Have Become Out Of Sync In Your Brain.According to professor of neurology James Giordano, sometimes your fast and slow pathways in your brain become “out of sync” and when things are even a fraction of a second off, your memory can't determine whether something has happened before or not. It’s called a “mismatch” and it’s just our mind thinking it’s “re-experiencing” something that is actually new. So no, it’s not a glitch in the Matrix. It’s just a brain fart.
- Your Brain Senses Familiarity. Giordano says “it might be possible that déjà vu occurs when you detect familiarity, stimulating the rhinal cortices, but don’t activate the hippocampus, which helps you recall more concrete memory details.” Or in less fancy words, that semi-remembering feeling you get is because you’re doing something you've done a bunch before.
- You're Young. Here’s some good news for all of you stuck in a déjà vu loop. It gets better with age. We experience the most déjà vu between 15 and 25 years old. It’s not going to go away when you hit 26, but you will get hit with that feeling less often, so enjoy being creeped out while you still can.
