The 2020 Major League Baseball season finally returned last night, without fans, and judging by a new survey, even if they allowed fans, they probably wouldn’t have gotten much of a crowd.
A Yahoo Finance/Harris poll finds:
- 72% of Americans say they wouldn’t feel comfortable going to a sporting event this summer.
- 47% of Americans are not at all comfortable with attending a sporting event this summer, while 22% are not very comfortable.
- Only 20% of people say they’d feel somewhat comfortable at a sporting event, and only 10% would feel very comfortable.
- And precautions like wearing masks wouldn’t do much to change those feelings.
- In fact, 48% say they wouldn’t feel more comfortable at an event if everyone wore masks, although 42% would feel somewhat more comfortable, and 10% would feel much more comfortable.
- Overall, 72% of people say they won’t feel more comfortable about attending a sporting event until next summer.
ONE MORE THING!The lack of fans in the stands for baseballhas prompted Fox Sports to take some drastic measures. The network announced they will be adding computer-generated fans to the stands starting with three games on Saturday. "We're not looking to fool everyone," Fox Sports vice president Brad Zager, shares. "We know it is a virtual crowd. But we also know how jarring watching a game in an empty stadium is on TV." He adds, "We believe that what we’re doing is creating a natural viewing experience.”
