Right about now is when parents and kids head to the big box stores to get all their back-to-school shopping done, but thanks to the coronavirus back-to-school shopping is looking a lot different this year.
According to a new survey:
- While in the past sales may have been the deciding factor on where moms shop, this year 90% say safety measures are what’s influencing where they do their shopping.
- Unlike previous years, most parents aren’t bringing their kids with them when they shop for school. The younger the child, the less likely the parent will take them shopping with them.
- There’s also a 550% increase in parents using home delivery or curbside pickup as part of their online shopping.
- Overall, 20% of parents and teachers say they started their back-to-school shopping earlier than last year.
- More than a third of parents and teachers haven't shopped yet though because they are waiting to learn their school’s plan for the new year.
So, what are parents buying this year?
- Well, not surprising, personal protection equipment like masks, sanitizers and wipes, are the top purchases by parents.
- In fact, 70% of parents plan to buy PPE for their kids this year, an increase of 2% from last year.
- Possibly expecting more at-home learning, parents are spending as much as $300 on bedroom and student workspace décor, which is a 66% increase from last year.
- Teachers are spending more money on PPE than on materials for classroom décor.
- 30% of teachers are also planning to purchase electronic equipment with the expectation of more virtual learning.
- More parents already purchased more tablets and other tech last year for their kids’ learning.
