Is it OK to talk politics in the office?

With the Presidential election less than 90 days away, politics is on a lot of folks’ minds. But is it ever okay to talk politics in the office? Well, according to a new survey, there are some very differing opinions on the subject.

A new Robert Half survey finds:

  • 22% of workers say it is appropriate to talk politics with colleagues in the office.
  • Meanwhile 26% say it’s NEVER okay.
  • Then there are 53% of workers who say it all depends on the situation.
  • Where you live may play a role in how you feel about office political talk.
  • Of 28 states surveyed, those in San Francisco are the most likely to be in favor of political talk in the office (83%).
  • New York is in second, although only 34% are in favor of it, followed by Los Angeles (33%).
  • On the flipside, professionals in Cincinnati and Phoenix are the most opposed to politics being discussed in the office (35% each), followed by Cleveland and Philadelphia (33% each).

The survey also notes:

  • Women are more likely than men to find office political talk inappropriate (30% vs. 20%).
  • Younger professionals are more in favor of it, with 32% of 25 to 40-year-olds finding it acceptable, as opposed to 13% of those 41 to 51 and 9% of those 55 and older.
  • Those without children are more likely than working parents to say political discussions are not okay
  • (31% vs. 20%).
