Tips for a healthier social media "relationship"!

Here’s a fact: Social media can be toxic. Here’s another fact: Social media isn’t going anywhere. Since going off the grid isn’t much of an option anymore, here are some ways that you could create a healthier relationship with your feeds.

  • Post and leave. If your doomscrolling has been off the charts lately, it might be time to think about switching to a strict contributor role on social media. If you’ve got a thought to post or a pic to share, login, drop it in your feed, and then get out of there. Think of it as a military strike but with your spicy content instead of bombs.
  • Search, don't scroll. You don’t go onto Google and then spend an hour flicking around right? Use that same mentality with social media. Be intentional with your time on Facebook or Twitter. Search whatever friend you wanted to check out, or find that meme you wanted to share and then don’t scroll.Basically, your thumb shouldn’t go up and down at all!
  • Turn off notifications. You can probably stick this in the “no duh” category but the fewer notifications you get, the less you’ll be enticed to log on.And honestly, do you really need to know your friend’s friend, who you talked to once at a party is going live?
  • Block and report.Don’t just let things slide on the internet. If you’re getting harassed, report it. If someone seems to trigger you, block them. A friendlier internet starts with you doing your part to clear out the garbage people.
