The summer season may have just ended but believe it or not a lot of people already have the holiday season on their minds. Now’s the time most folks start making their holiday travel plans, but thanks to the coronavirus, the 2020 holiday travel season will be anything but typical.
Still, some folks will be hoping to travel home, or go on vacation over the holiday season, and if they are, there’s a lot they need to consider before booking their trip, and Expedia is here to help.
Among the suggestions:
- When it comes to airfare, Expedia notes that it may benefit travelers to book their trips earlier this year.
- Previously those booking more than 90 days out paid more, but average ticket price trends seem to suggest folks will get a better deal if they book earlier.
- Expedia notes that average ticket prices will begin to climb starting in October, although they will still be lower than last year.
- For Thanksgiving, the site recommends booking flights 60 to 90 days out, and for December and Christmas, 30 to 60 days out.
- For hotels, Expedia notes reports warm weather leisure destinations, and domestic ski and snow destinations are already seeing increases in demands.
- They suggest those booking such popular destinations book early, but make sure everything is refundable, especially when it comes to vacation rentals.
- For car rentals, Expedia recommends not necessarily booking the cheapest rate, but go for flexibility. It may be worth the extra money for a “reserve now, pay at pick-up” rate, since you won’t be penalized if you have to cancel.
- Also, avoid booking a rental the day before Thanksgiving when prices can be as much as 30% higher. Prices are cheaper the Friday or Saturday before. And for Christmas, the Friday before the holiday can be as much as 15% cheaper, with Christmas Day being the most expensive rate.
