Signs that you need a break from "the news"!

Between updates on the ‘rona, the civil unrest, and the upcoming election, it’s never been easier to doomscroll yourself into a panic attack. Newsflash: there IS such a thing as too much news. Here are some signs that it’s time for you to tune out:

  • You're Experiencing Physical Signs Of Anxiety. If the news is making your “fight or flight” response kick in, that’s a red flag. Clinical psychologist Ellen Hendriksen says once the news gets perceived as a threat it can make our bodies involuntarily get defensive. If you’re feeling things like a tight jaw, sore neck or shoulders, gastrointestinal problems, sleeping difficulties, or difficulty concentrating, take a break from the news because they could be a result of all the chronic stress it’s causing you.
  • Burnout Symptoms. According to Hendriksen, there are three telltale signs that you’re heading for a major burnout: fatigue, resentment, and working harder while achieving less. A heavy dose of news can make these symptoms worse. If you’re feeling them, skip scrolling for a few days. You might be surprised how much energy starts coming back to you.
  • You Just Want Everyone To Stop Talking About The News. Are news and politics becoming your default conversation? Then it’s probably time to unfollow CNN and Fox News for a few days. Because spoiler: No one is looking to having a Zoom call with you.
