Working at a job where your boss plays favorites can be demoralizing at best and career-ending at worst. And it’s all too common of a problem since recent studies show that more than half of executives admit they’ve done it. It’s a super awkward situation so here are some tips on how to manage it without losing your job.
- Stay Out Of The Drama. The best way to avoid getting stressed out about the interoffice favoritism might be just to ignore it. Tell yourself that your colleagues' relationship with management is their own and out of your control. All you can do is work on your own strengths and do your best not to let your boss being bad at their job, make you bad at yours.
- Consider The Upside Of Not Being Favored. You’re probably a little jealous of your manager’s ‘golden child,’ but should you be? Take a second to think about the perks of not being the favorite. Those folks have to live with never knowing whether their work is actually good or if they just get praised because of preferential treatment. Meanwhile, you know that when you achieve something and get recognition, it’s because you’re talented. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your coworkers lowkey hating you all of the time.
- Change Your Approach On How You’re Trying To Influence Your Boss. If you decide you want to play the game and win your boss’s favor, at least try to change up your strategies every once in a while. One month, try to show off your creativity, then the next month, try to show off your knowledge of your company’s goals. But if you keep on trying new angles, and nothing seems to work, you may want to consider using that time to build on other relationships. Perhaps one with a mentor on LinkedIn that will give you a new job.
