You can’t turn on any device without someone yelling at you to go vote and it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Especially because our generation still isn’t listening. According to a new survey, it will be another election cycle of hearing pundits talking about “low youth turnout.”
The new study found one in four Millennials and Gen-Zers are choosing not to cast a ballot in 2020. Now for some, they do have a very good excuse. For example, 14% said there were too many barriers to them voting like a lack of transportation or inability to take off from work.
Then, of course, there’s the younger end of Gen-Z who literally can’t legally vote yet. Even though it would be cute to see an eight-year-old casting a ballot, we all agree they get a pass. But as for the rest of our generation who are choosing to stay home this Tuesday, the number one reason they listed was that “neither candidate represents my beliefs or values.”
- As the lead researcher Lynzie Riebling puts it “these politicians care so much about the youth vote and they’re always pressuring them to vote, but they never take the time to understand their opinions.” So that’s why 28% of Gen Z and Millennials are going to sit out 2020 and wait until someone comes around that does.
