What to say when you DO NOT want to be "official"!?

This isn’t the 40s. We don’t need to be “going steady” with someone if we want to keep things casual. But here’s the thing, we do have to let our partner know we aren’t trying to go Facebook official with things at some point.

And since that conversation can be awkward as all get out, here’s some tips on how to pull it off without getting into a fight.

  • From The Heart.Mental health counselor Megan Murphy advises you to take a heartfelt, honest approach. You could try something like, "I've loved spending time together, but I need some time to decide if this relationship is something I want to dive into. How would you feel about not using labels for now?"
  • Be Direct.Dating coach Clara Artschwager basically says if you put off having the non-label chat you’re rude. There’s no perfect way to do it but do it fast and be compassionate about it. Go with “this is really hard to say, I really enjoy spending time with you, and it bums me out to say this, a relationship doesn't feel right for me.” Then sit back, listen, and allow them to be hurt.

Hopefully, they take it okay and you don’t have to put out any figurative or literal fires. And if they decide not to call it quits then, you should talk about how things should be moving forward. "Talk about ways you can both get your core needs met. If they want to say you are a 'couple,' ask them what that means to them, and then investigate what you can willingly give," Murphy says.
