Holding hands seems innocent enough, but it’s also pretty intimate. Relationship coach and psychotherapistToni Colemanexplains, “We only hold hands with people we have a certain level of comfort with or attraction to.”
And even though you’re probably a veteran hand-holder, you probably don’t realize there are so many ways to do it. Coleman says there are at least seven and each says something specific about the relationship. This is what they show about your bond, according to this expert.
- Handhold style: Fingers intertwined- This shows you both crave a deeper connection and says “I’m into you and I can’t quite get close enough.”
- Handhold style: Loose grip- Couples who don’t know each other well yet and are trying to start a connection may go for the soft grip.
- Handhold style: On top and bottom- Your partner holding your hand with both of theirs shows they’re 100% paying attention to every word you say and they’re probably staring into your eyes as they do.
- Handhold style: Firm, but not interlaced grip- This tight grab could be in a protective way to offer comfort or reassurance or a way to assert dominance, it’s all about the context here.
- Handhold style: Arm draped combo- Sitting side by side with their arm draped around you while you’re holding hands says “I want to be as close as possible and I want the world to know how we feel about each other.”
- Handhold style: One hand gently resting on top- This is the way you touch when delivering bad news or when one partner is upset.
- Handhold style: Over-the-shoulder walk -It’s a PDA cuddle and says, “Even though we’re walking down the street, we’re staying as connected as we can.”
