When it comes to your beauty routine while living in self-isolation, there are two roads you can go down. You could opt to go full Tom Hanks from “Castaway” and let it grow, or you could become your own stylist. If you’re opting for the first route, no judgment, you let your freak flag fly.But if you’ve decided to DIY your haircut, here’s a few tips.
- Don’t cut a fringe horizontally.Celebrity hairdresser Jamie Stevens says “if you need to take a bit of weight out of a fringe, use a point cutting technique.” This is where you hold the scissors vertically and snip into the ends. Stevens says “don’t try and cut horizontally across your fringe, and avoid any style that requires blunt or straight lines.”
- Make sure your hair is wet. Hairstylist Ana Gomes recommends getting your hair wet all over so it sits completely flat while you are cutting. When it’s nice a soaked “comb all the hair forward so it sits above the chest, tightly flatten the hair between your middle and index finger, stop at your desired length, and cut in a straight line.” Gomes says to follow the same method on the other side for a “slightly rounded one-length haircut.”
The experts all agree that it's probably best to have a roommate do it for you. And if that’s not an option, too just wait. Doing your own hair should be an ‘in-case of emergency’only activity. And remember, now's not the time to make a drastic style change so keep it simple if you’re committed to the self-cut.You don’t want to show up in your next video conference looking like a 2007, umbrella-wielding,Britney Spears.
