Isolation tips from the experts of isolation!

A polar scientist, a submarine captain, and a monk walk into separate isolation. Not a good setup for a joke, and also I don’t have a punchline... But I do have some lockdown tips from these professional isolators so that’s at least something, right?

  • Polar scientist Marion Dierickx.Marion is a postdoctoral fellow in experimental cosmology at Harvard and spends two to three months a year in the south pole working on telescopes. You think it’s bad being asked to stay inside? She literally can’t go outside most of the time without becoming a popsicle. She gets through it by controlling her environment. Marion recommends cleaning like mad and channeling all your anxious energy into redecorating.
  • Submarine captain Ryan Ramsey.Imagine if your home office was nuclear powered and filled with missiles. That’s how Captain Ramsey spent a three-year isolation period aboard the HMS Turbulent submarine. His advice is to “get into a routine [...] Do the same things, in the same order, every day and make the weekends different.” That way you might have a better chance at remembering what day it actually is.
  • Monk Christopher Jamison. We’re all basically one bad quarantine haircut away being a full-on monk, so here’s some advice from one. Jamison is the president of theEnglish Benedictine Congregationand literally wrote the book onFinding Happinessas a monk. He believes the key to making it through lockdown is positivity. “Do not begin the day by rehearsing your grievances. Begin by remembering you’re alive and there are good things still,” says Jamison. “You may have to do tough things later, but take it one step at a time.”
