Things to ponder before you quit your job!

The lockdown is making people take a long hard look at their life and some are realizing their job isn’t worth going back to when the office opens back up. If you fall into the group of folks thinking about making a COVID inspired career change, there’s obviously a lot to consider. Here are some things experts say you should chew on before dropping your two-week notice via Zoom.

  • Do be hasty. Don’t let the stress of today cloud your judgment for making decisions that affect your future. Psychotherapist Serge Beddington-Behrens says you need to ask yourself things like “If you quit, can you afford to? Are you sure of finding another job? Or do you have enough money not to need to work and for how long?” And unless you can answer those things with a clear head, you’re probably just going to end up going from one extreme to another.
  • Make changes in your current role. Instead of quitting, life and business coach Wendy Smith says to consider whether your values could be fulfilled by making some simple adjustments in your current job. This could mean more or less responsibility, a pay rise, different support structures, or even a sabbatical. It’s worth considering if it’s the job you hate or the environment.
  • Consider if it’s coming from an emotional place. Has your decision to quit come from your head or your heart? Business psychology consultant Professor Binna Kandola says when people quit, it’s either for positive reasons or more emotional ones. For example, if you’ve lined up a new job that gets your more money, less of a commute, and increases your quality of life in general, that would be a positive switch. But when you’re making the choice to leave your job based on pure emotions, like during a stressful time like this, it could be one you regret. That’s why Kandola says to wait a little longer before quitting and to “seek help and support, and once a few months have passed, look at the decision again.”
