Sleep problems? It might be that you are working from home

If your snooze button is getting a lot of action during the lockdown, you’re not alone. Professor of medicine Jennifer Martin says the ultimate irony about working from home is that even though you’ve got more access to your bed, studies show our sleep gets worse. Here are the major problems with bedtime in quarantine and how to get your sleep cycle back on track:

  • Oddball Schedules. Allison Siebernfrom the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences says that “with no closure to the workday, [work] can drift into the evening hours and decrease the amount of time that one has for personal downtime.” And not only are people going to bed later, but their quality of sleep is also going down too. Martin says there isn’t any “conclusive evidence” as to why we’re so restless, but says the running theory is people have substituted their commute with more time in bed, and that’s thrown a wrench into the whole operation.
  • Flex-Spaces.Coming home from work gave your place a natural relaxing quality. But now that we’re stuck working in it, it’s going from being a place of peace and tranquility to just another spot for stress. To fight that, Martin says to make sure you’re not bringing your work to bed.Keep your bedroom a safe space.
  • Screen time.According to Siebern, “the use of technology close to bedtime, with the exposure to increased blue light, can impact melatonin release, a hormone which regulates your sleep and wake cycle.” So if you’re tired of being tired, put down the phone and shut off the Netflix way before bedtime. The bags under your eyes will thank you.
