Consider this your spoiler warning. If you want to go on believing all the cool stuff you’ve seen in action movies is real, now is the time for earmuffs. On the other hand, if you want to know where pop culture has completely let us down, here are some of the things that only happen in movies and TV:
- Truth Serums. Every scene featuring someone getting injected with truth serum and immediately revealing everything is nonsense. According to the CIA, “any individual that can hold out in normal interrogation can hold out in a drugged-state.” And once again, that’s from the CIA. An organization that knows a thing or two about getting people to talk.
- Space Explosions. There’s nothing much cooler to watch on the big screen than a bunch of spaceships fighting it out among the stars. But if you saw it in real life, it would actually be pretty lame. Science ABC says not only are explosions in space much shorter and less dramatic than how they play out in movies, but they’re also silent. Those cool laser blaster “pew pew” sounds we’ve grown up with have been a lie.
- Severed Hand Scan.If there is a biometric scanner in a movie, there’s usually a pretty good chance that at some point, someone is going to chop off some poor security guard’s hand and use it to get through the door. But the FBI says that’s nothing but movie logic. In real life, scanners check “capillary flow through your hand” and not just finger/palm prints.
